Inventory is what sets a small business apart from others, but how to arrange the products is just as important. Displays change the customer’s experience, and can make a store either beautiful and organized, or messy and overwhelming. Especially in stores like Serendipity Road, Joyful Tantrum, and Shop With Moxie, brainstorming the most effective ways to present our immense selection is key to giving the shopper a positive experience as they browse.

Leah Sims is one of our employees that changes many of the displays throughout the year, and she says that there are definitely methods that make creating displays more seamless.

Firstly, changing displays frequently in key visible areas is needed in order to give a fresh experience to returning customers. Whether it be adjusting them to match the time of year with upcoming holidays, or just to update the area to make way for new products in our collection, switching up key displays every few weeks is usually the norm.

For example, Leah took the time to change the front displays at Shop with Moxie to showcase back to school products as the end of summer approaches. It’s important to think ahead before the fall rolls around, so that the products are ready for the customers who do their shopping earlier. In the store we also have end caps on our aisles, and the products on these change quite frequently due to their high visibility in the store.

When it comes to the actual structure of the display, symmetry is key. It’s important to make the display aesthetically pleasing so the customer can browse effectively and efficiently. If the display doesn’t make sense, the customer is going to be less receptive to the products on that table. A good rule of thumb is to organize each item in odd numbers, and to make the whole area balanced and symmetrical. Ensuring that the largest items are in the center helps this, and it can also be helpful to have a particular shape in mind when building a new display.

Something called “shopability” is also always front of mind when Leah or another Moxie Crew member reorganizes an area of the store. No matter how good a display looks in theory, it’s crucial to make sure that customers are able to pick up and put down items on the table without displacing other items in the surrounding area.

Some other options for displays include placing items near each other that share a theme, purpose, or color. This makes the display make sense visually and practically, directing customers to other items they might be interested in nearby. The goal is always to make the shopping experience easier, so keeping those types of products together directs the customer to the correct places.

The special thing about shopping locally is that you are guaranteed a specialty experience each time you shop at the store. As opposed to shopping at a large commercial center, boutiques offer unique items and give the shopper a top-tier experience when browsing. At our stores, we want to supply you with unique products displayed in a thoughtful way that reflects the high quality of our inventory. We recognize that there’s a lot to look at in our stores, so being organized and avoiding clutter is always the goal to prioritize customer satisfaction.
